11 Amazing Facts About French Bulldogs

11 Amazing Facts About French Bulldogs

Milly Jones March 14, 2021

1. FRENCH BULLDOGS ORIGINATED FROM ENGLAND.

It is unclear where the French bulldog’s originated, but most sources trace their roots to English bulldogs. The mini versions of the breeds were owned by lacemakers in England, who often used the little pups as lap warmers while they worked.

When the lace industry moved to France, the workers took their dogs with them. There, the English bulldogs bred with terriers to create French bulldogs.

2. BRED FOR COMPANIONSHIP.

French bulldogs are friendly, affectionate and are bred for companionship. Although it is challenging to house-train them, they get along with other dogs well, and they don’t bark that much. They can do with less exercise and can happily fit in small areas and enjoy the safety of a crate.

3. MOSTLY BORN THROUGH ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION.

The unusual postures of French bulldogs make mating challenging. The males have great difficulty, reaching the females, often get overheated and exhausted in the process. For that reason, the majority of French bulldogs are created via artificial insemination.

This method makes each litter of pups more expensive. However, it allows breeders to check for potential problems during the process.

French bulldogs often have difficulties giving birth; as a result, many must undergo a Cesarean-section. The operation ensures the dog doesn’t experience too much stress, reducing future health complications.

4. DIFFICULTY FLYING.

These breeds are brachycephalic, meaning they have a broad short skull. They have shorter snouts compared to other dogs.

Their pushed-in faces can lead to various breathing issues. A high level of stress and unbearably warm temperatures can lead to terminal ends for dogs with smaller snouts. Many breeds like bulldogs and pugs have died while flying. Therefore, most airlines have banned them.

Fortunately, there are airlines dedicated explicitly to only pets, such as Pet Jets. These companies transport dogs with special needs on their own flights separate from their owners. There are people on board assigned to take care of any pup that gets sick or panic.

5. THEY CANNOT SWIM.

Due to their squat frame and big head, French bulldogs aren’t able to swim. Therefore, owners must take great care of the dogs around the pools. If you plan to go on a beach vacation with your doggie, they might feel a little left out.
