Stowe Pinnacle is a four-kilometer mountain trail that attracts tons of tourists. The moderately difficult hiking trail offers some of the best views of the area. But besides that, hikers also come to meet Samson and Baylor, two Golden Retrievers that have become local celebrities.
A lot of dogs join their owners in walking up to the summit. It gives them an actual chance to exercise and bond with their humans. Except for Samson And Baylor.
The two dogs regularly go to the summit on their own. And this has given a lot of hikers a pleasant surprise.
Trail-loving pups
The two dogs live with their owner on a property in Stowe, Vermont, very near the base of the trailhead. And for the last seven years, the two have been persistent in going up by themselves. Their owner, Perry Schafer, tried to contain them at first, but there was just no stopping the duo.
According to Perry, ever since she got Baylor as a puppy, the dog developed an uncanny skill of escaping, But he always comes back. Several years later, Samson joined the family, and the older dog had a great influence on his little brother.
The dog owner tried to do everything that she could, short of chaining them all the time, to keep them from escaping. But the two have learned to work together to open doors, scale fences, and digging holes.
Responsible dog ownership
Perry says that she knows some people frown upon her for not working harder to keep the dogs from escaping. Many have filed reports about the dogs being on the loose. But she said that she knows her dogs are very friendly and would never harm anyone. During all those years, they have never harmed or injured anyone.
Many of the hikers, though, are thrilled to see the dogs welcome them to the summit. Some even go there just to see them. It makes their efforts all worth it.
