Rye is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois that has trained hard to become a drug detection dog. Together with his handler, Officer Iside, they went through hundreds of hours to hone his skills and abilities. The program was tiring, but it was all worth it.
When the intelligent pooch graduated, he was at the top of his class. The handler and the future K9 officer got remarkable grades in every category. There was no doubt that Rye would be an excellent addition to the K9 unit of the West Covina Police Department.
The hardworking dog proved it on his very first day on the job.
A routine traffic stop
As a drug detection dog, Rye’s primary task is to find concealed illegal substances. With his long hours of training, the dog could detect numerous types of drugs. When officers pulled over a silver midsize SUV for a vehicle code violation, his services were needed.
While apprehending the suspect, the cops discovered methamphetamine under the driver’s seat. They quickly detained the man, and Rye and his handler were called in. The officers suspected that there were more drugs hidden in the car. They were right.
60 pounds
Once Rye and Officer Iside arrived, they immediately got to work. The dog went around the car, leading his handler. He sniffed everywhere and would alert his partner when he found something. The vehicle had several hidden compartments that housed bags after bags of white crystal.
When they were done, more than 60 pounds of drugs were found. Those could have found their way on the streets and ruined a lot of lives. The suspect was kept in jail, and a judge set his bail to one million dollars.
Rye’s performance that day showed how good he is. The dog has earned the respect of his fellow officers and received a good treat too. He left a very good impression and they now know that they can rely on him.
