A guy and his friends went four-wheeling in the desert one day. It was all fun and games until they saw Kelly, a hairless and malnourished dog, stranded on the salt flats.
Rescuing Kelly
The group of friends immediately took the dog to a shelter that had a vet on call. Suzy Efthemes, a volunteer, was shocked to see Kelly in such a bad condition. She had never seen a dog like this before.
The rescuers had to put Kelly in isolation while they treated her because of the extremities of her condition. The dog being isolated only helped her physical wellbeing. But their set up made it more complicated for Kelly to trust other people other than those who fed her.
Kelly was in quarantine for at least two months. She was an absolute fighter; Kelly came out of isolation with her tail wagging and happy looking eyes.
The dog stayed in the shelter to continue healing. In those weeks, Kelly’s hair started to grow back, and she was getting healthier.
Forever home
After a few more weeks, the shelter decided that Kelly was ready to find her forever home. The rescuers posted on their website and Facebook about Kelly’s story.
The shelter’s post reached a lot of people. They received hundreds of applications in just a few days, but one stood out.
Whittney and Jamie Jaques were also volunteers at the. They saw every process the dog had to go through, and they knew that Kelly required a lot of love and attention.
One day, when Jamie was doing her usual house routine, the shelter called her to say she was officially the new owner of Kelly. Jamie was excited. She dropped everything she was doing and jumped in her car to drive to the shelter.
Jamie and her husband instantly fell in love with Kelly. Despite the dog’s lack of human touch for months, she was an affectionate dog.
