Two Good Samaritans and the New York Police District (NYPD) rescued a puppy named Georgia from the freezing waters of Jamaica Bay at the southwestern tip of Long Island, New York.
Carol DeNaro said that, at first, her husband Scott thought it was a duck or a seal bobbing up and down the water. The couple watched the animal from afar for about a minute or two before Scott realized that it was a dog struggling to stay afloat. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, with the pup’s life at stake, they instantly sprang into action and called the attention of the harbor patrol.

The NYPD posted about what happened on their Twitter account and said that the dog, whom they called Tinkerbell, was quickly rescued and taken to the vet. In a follow-up tweet not long after, the NYPD said the pup was reunited with her family and that her real name is Georgia. They added that it was a happy ending to a cold, wet morning.
Karen Dublin and Jason Novetsky, Georgia’s owners, had just adopted her five days before the incident. They were out on a walk when suddenly, something startled the dog. When she managed to get off her leash, Jason attempted to calm her down and call her back by using his sweetest voice and kneeling. However, she still decided to run.

Jason ran after Georgia for about 40 blocks before losing sight of her. The couple immediately posted the pup’s photo on Facebook, then asked people on the street if they had seen her.
Fortunately, in only a matter of minutes, Karen received a call from the NYPD informing her that Georgia had been rescued from Jamaica Bay. The dog owners said they are happy now that their beloved pet is back home.
