Marley is a three-year-old dog that loves taking long walks at the beach. His owner, Steve Sheppard, said that Marley is a laid back dog that basically loves to laze around the house when he is not outside. He adopted the pooch when a breeder deemed it unfit to be a breeding dog.
During one of their regular walks in Petone Beach in New Zealand, Marley did something that was so unlikely of him that it surprised his owner Steve. That something was truly heroic that it even put him in the news.
Marley, the lifeguard
Steve and Marley were taking a leisurely stroll at the boardwalk when they suddenly heard an older woman cry out. When they looked, they saw the senior pointing at something on the water.
The two went near the railing to see what it was and saw a small dog drowning in the sea’s strong current. The dog’s head was bobbing up and down, and although it tried hard to paddle, it wasn’t strong enough to go through the waves.

In fact, the current was taking the dog out to the open sea. In a matter of minutes, the poor pup would be too far to reach and save. But before Steve can think of anything to do, Marley instantly leaped from the boardwalk and started running towards the ocean.
He then ran across the water and started paddling towards the smaller dog. When Marley reached the drowning pooch, he used his head to push it towards land.
The two dogs were making progress but were taking a lot of time. Fortunately, a man by the beach saw what was happening and ran towards the two dogs. He grabbed the smaller pooch while Marley swam behind them. At that point, Steve was by the beach waiting for Marley to come back.
Steve said he was astonished by what Marley did. He wasn’t trained to do anything like that, and he just acted on instinct. That night, exhausted from his heroic deeds, Marley had a good night’s sleep.
