Lots of people have dreams or goals that they would want to achieve soon. Some want to become a doctor, teacher, or engineer, while others prefer to work in an office or start their business someday. But one man from Mexico did not dream of becoming or doing any of these—his only goal in life was to travel and save animals in need, and he did it in six years.
Meet Edgardo Zúñiga Juárez, a man who has a great interest in dogs and traveling. Six years ago, he decided to go on a land trip and rescue animals in need that he’d encounter along the way. His journey started around the border of Mexico, bringing along his three dogs and a cart of belongings.
Before Juárez began with his journey, he knew that a lot of injured rural dogs were not as fortunate as those living in the cities. Most of the time, they were left neglected, and some were even abandoned on the streets. So with this in mind, Juárez was determined to save as many injured rural dogs as he could.
Of course, it wasn’t an easy job for Juárez at first. Some dogs were not cooperative because they were afraid to interact with humans. The good thing was his three dogs were there to help calm these homeless dogs and show them that they did not intend to harm them.
As Juárez continued with his rescue mission and spent his whole six years on it, he couldn’t fathom how some people could do cruel things to animals. But instead of feeling angry at the people behind the dogs’ misfortunes, he focused more on helping these dogs start living a better life. He made sure they would feel the love and care that they did not experience for a long time.
In six years, Juárez was able to rescue about five hundred dogs. He would have loved to adopt them all, but he didn’t have the resources to care for them. So, he finds them a forever home instead.
Edgardo Perros – Saviour of the Dogs
A few months ago I was driving out of the small Mexican town of Mazunte, Oaxaca, when I saw a peculiar sight on the side of the road. A man was pushing a trolley along the road and surrounding him were dogs. Dogs were on top of his trolley. Dogs were behind him, in front of him and by his side. Tails were wagging furiously, barks were sounding and he just kept pushing his trolley through the heat. This is the story of Edgardo Perros. Thank you to Fernando Cortez Marques from https://www.facebook.com/videosforacause/ for all his help in shooting this project with me and editing all the Spanish interviews!Thank you to Laurie Alexander for helping with the logistics and thank you to Sat Chit Ananda for his translation work.
