They are capable of doing things humans cannot do such as, detecting diseases inside the body using their powerful sense of smell. They can smell diabetes, cancer and other illnesses that Doctors can miss. These loyal friends can go out of their way, doing all they can to help their owners.
Meet Keola, an American Akita, who lives with her human family in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. This dog did something incredible, which saved Mom’s life.

Her owners, Ricky and Alhanna Butler love and care for her as part of the family. When Mom Alhanna fell pregnant, Keola very quickly realised their family was expanding and was excited about it. However, Alhanna also noticed that Keola’s behaviour around her had changed. She started following her around untiringly.

As the pregnancy progressed, Alhanna started experiencing terrible lower back pain and decided to visit her doctor. Her doctor brushed it off as one of the issues of pregnancy. She came back home, thinking it was probably nothing serious and carried on with daily activities.
As the unborn baby kept growing, the dog even became more restless and nosey. Keola could tell that something was not right with Mom. She wouldn’t stop barking and sniffing around her. This behaviour puzzled the couple as they could see that Keola was trying to tell them a message.

Alhanna admits that ‘nobody understood how ill she was, except Keola. The nudging and crying was something Keola had never done before therefore, she could hardly figure out why she was acting that way all of a sudden.
Ricky told her that, ‘Keola got upset whenever she went to work, which was quite unusual of her.’ Nonetheless, Alhanna acted on the dog’s warning and went back to the hospital. Her condition changed, and they rushed her to intensive care ward.

The expectant mother was on the verge of death as doctors discovered something shocking! She had a rare form of kidney infection, affecting both of her kidneys, causing the excruciating back pain.
She was lucky she got to the hospital in time and received the treatment she desperately needed. Alhanna wrote on Facebook about her painful experience that, “Because it was untreated for so long, her condition was one of the worst cases they had ever seen.”
‘On top of that, she had an antibiotic-resistant bacterium, ever seen in only one person in the United Kingdom. Any further delay of treatment could have cost her, her life and that of her baby too.’ Thanks to her hero, Keola for detecting what the doctor couldn’t – she saved the day!

Alhanna recovered fully, and was able to carry the pregnancy to term in good health. She gave birth to a bouncing baby boy called Lincoln. Keola and Lincoln are now best of friends.
