Mariesa and Chris Hughes run the Mr Mo Project, a senior dog rescue. They have 20 dogs of their own and 106 senior dogs in foster homes. They cover those dogs financially for the rest of their lives and spend about 40 to $45,000 a month.
Chris and Mariesa started the Mr Mo Project when they adopted a senior pitbull called Moses from the Seminole County shelter in Florida. He ended up there because he was well advanced in age.

The couple brought him home and cared for him for about a year and a half. However, as time went by, they noticed his back end was beginning to get a little weak, and he needed an MRI done.
They decided to sell their hot tub to get the MRI done. Moses was such a special dog to the couple, and he just melted into their hearts and home. They did all sorts of therapies such as acupuncture, herbs, and oils, including love, until he passed away five weeks later.

When the dog died, an idea came to Chris while driving down the road. He looked over at Mariesa and suggested, “We should start saving senior dogs and paying their medical expenses.” An idea well received by Mariesa.
The couple’s typical day usually starts around 6:00 AM, feeding the dogs downstairs. The big dogs have their separate rooms and are fed there to stop them from eating up the smaller dogs’ foods.
Chris already had six dogs when they met, and Mariesa had two. They both knew they were going to have a lot of dogs in their home. So they wanted a one-floor house to not worry about too many stairs. Therefore, they tailored the whole place to their dogs’ needs.

They installed oxygen tanks in the kennels, a suction unit, a hydrotherapy unit and a giant bed built when they had eight dogs. The bed became too small, and now they have-Two King size beds next to each other.
When Chris and Mariesa had a vet bill of $10,000 they needed to raise, they decided to raffle off Mariesa’s wedding ring, which got them a little more than they needed to. However, the person that won the raffle said, “Absolutely not! You’re not going to give her ring away.” So, she still gets to wear it.

Another donor also challenged Chris to shave off his beard for a donation of $500. So, he did!
Petplan pet insurance donated $10,000 because what the couple is doing for these fantastic dogs can’t be compared with anything.
All thanks to Moses, the pitbull, for opening doors for many other senior dogs taken out of the shelter, those in need, the meekest, most vulnerable and suffering, to have the best lives they deserve.
