Why Do Dogs Bite?

Why Do Dogs Bite?

Milly Jones October 2, 2020

Although dogs are known over the years to be “Man’s best friend”, there are times when people can’t understand why their beloved canine friends behave differently.

Therefore, it is essential to know the underlying reasons why dogs sometimes behave differently.

You can teach your dog appropriate behaviour. Experts say dog behaviours can be controlled through proper training.

Environmental and social factors are the main contributor to dogs’ change of behaviours. Therefore, to control these responses, the dog owner ought to teach their dogs the right way to respond to such situations. For example:

Dog-Bite

Statistically, almost 5 million people in the U.S. get bitten by dogs yearly. That is nearly 2% of the total population in the U.S. More so; dog bites cases rank as the second most common cause of emergencies in the hospitals.

So, the question is: Why Do Dogs Bite?

According to experts, dogs may bite due to the following reasons:

1. Excitement

When somebody plays with their dog, the dog tends to get excited. Therefore, since dogs don’t have hands to use when playing, they use their mouth to catch things. When this happens, the dog might accidentally hurt someone without any intention.

2. Protection

Dogs can be very possessive, so, whenever they want to protect their possession, they will bite the person who attempts to take it away from them. So, when people get near the dog’s property, the dog tends to grind to make the person leave the stuff alone. Secondly, a female dog that has just given birth to her new puppies can easily bite to protect them, when you try to take the puppies.

3. Fear

Sometimes, dogs are afraid, just like humans, which explains why, when someone shocks them, they respond by biting back to protect themselves.

It is better to avoid these situations and leave the dog alone. Most people always love playing around with their dog, ignorant of how and when the dog should be left alone.

Dogs have feelings, too, just like humans. When the emotions are all mixed up, their only known response to protect themselves is to bite because they can’t understand the situation logically. Therefore, people should know to avoid such circumstances.

4. Pain

Whenever the dog is not feeling sick, they don’t understand why they are feeling that way. As a result, when someone, including their master, touches them, they may think that it’s the person who causes the pain. Therefore, they tend to fight back by biting.
